Overview

Asset Categories in FixAhead allow you to classify and organize assets (e.g., equipment, devices) for streamlined maintenance, reporting, and resource allocation. This guide explains how to create and manage asset categories.

Prerequisites
  • Permissions: Administrator or "Owner" role.

  • Plan Requirements: Available on all plans (including "Pay per Asset").

  • Navigation Path: Dashboard → Asset Categories.

Steps to Create an Asset Category1. Access the Asset Categories Section
  • Go to Dashboard → Library → Asset Categories (left-side menu).

  • You’ll see a table listing existing categories (e.g., "PC" with 1 asset).

  • Click Add Categories (top-right button).

2. Fill in Asset Category Details
  • Asset Category Name (Required):

    • Enter a unique, descriptive name (e.g., "Printers," "HVAC Units").

    • Avoid special characters or overly generic terms.

  • Example:

Asset Category *: [Enter Asset Category Name]

3. Save or Cancel

  • Add Category: Saves the new category.

  • Cancel: Exits without saving.

Key Features & Best Practices
  1. Hierarchy & Organization:

    • Use categories to group similar assets (e.g., "IT Equipment," "Machinery").

    • Subdivide broad categories (e.g., "PC" → "Laptops," "Desktops").

  2. Linked Data:

    • Categories influence:

      • Preventive Maintenance Schedules

      • Technician Skill Assignments

      • Custom Fields (e.g., warranty info for "Servers").

  3. Naming Conventions:

    • Be consistent (e.g., "Vehicle - Forklift," "Vehicle - Truck").

    • Include locations if applicable (e.g., "Lab - Microscopes").

  4. Edit/Delete Categories:

    • Hover over a category in the table → Use Actions (edit/delete icons).

    • Note: Deleting a category unassigns its assets.

Pro Tips
  • Bulk Import: Use Library → Import Tools to add multiple categories via CSV.

  • Custom Fields: Assign category-specific fields (e.g., "Calibration Date" for lab equipment).

  • Reporting: Filter work orders/issues by category in Reports.

Next Steps
  1. Assign assets to categories during Asset Creation.

  2. Configure Preventive Maintenance rules per category.

  3. Set Technician Skills required for category-specific repairs.
